Our Work

Two frameworks.
One system.

Apto's frameworks are designed to work together. The MAC Framework identifies where multilingual learners are. FLOW equips every teacher to respond. Assessment and teaching, finally aligned.

Assessment
MAC Framework
Multilingual Academic Competency

The MAC Framework gives schools a consistent, curriculum-grounded way to assess multilingual learners. Unlike global proficiency scales, MAC is designed around the academic language demands students actually face — in science, maths, humanities, and beyond.

MAC — Four Modes of Academic Language
Reception
Processing academic texts
How students make meaning from written and spoken academic content — reading, listening, and interpreting information across subjects.
Production
Constructing academic responses
How students express and communicate ideas in academic contexts — writing, speaking, and constructing responses appropriate to subject and purpose.
Interaction
Exchanging meaning with others
How students participate in academic dialogue — discussing ideas, defending positions, asking questions, and exchanging information in collaborative contexts.
Mediation
Reformulating for audience & purpose
How students adapt and reformulate information — summarising, explaining complex content to different audiences, and bridging meaning across languages and contexts.

MAC tells you where students are. FLOW tells every teacher what to do about it.
